LEADING THE WAY IN ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
New World Lincoln is leading the way for other New Zealand supermarkets in environmental sustainability. This means meeting our needs today without compromising the environment for future generations. It is New Zealand’s first wind powered supermarket, and the building itself has been designed with environmental sustainability it mind.
GENERATING OUR OWN POWER
Two of the most noticeable features are our 10 metre tall wind turbines. These generate 3.9kilowatts of energy. So we are using less electricity from the national grid.
HOW ELSE DO WE SAVE ENERGY?
Concrete aggregate flooring: The flooring used in our store heats up during the day and lets out this latent heat over night, so we use less energy to heat the building.
Making the most of natural light: We let in natural light via windows down both sides of the building. When it is sunny, every second florescent light is turned off. This means we use less energy lighting the store.
Solar panels: These are attached to all of the lights in the car park.
Use wasted heat to heat our water: Energy is saved by collecting heat generated from the motors which run our freezer and chiller systems. This heat energy can then heat our hot water.
USING MORE ECO FRIENDLY CHEMICALS AND PAINTS
We use Johnson and Diversey cleaning chemicals; these produce less chemical and packaging waste than other leading cleaning chemical manufacturers. The company has a commitment to treading lighter on the planet, and were the first business to business company to join the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning. The paints used throughout the store are low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These paints are more environmentally friendly as VOCs are emitted from paints as gases, which can then contribute to global warming, harm human health and destroy the ozone layer we need to shield the Earth from harmful ultra violet radiation.
USING RECYCLED MATERIALS
In hard wearing areas such as the deli, staff room and locker room, recycled rubber flooring is used. This is not only an advantage because it is recycled, but it does not contain PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride); this is cheap to use in building materials but has negative effects on the environment as it emits toxic compounds both when it is manufactured and disposed of.
REDUCING WASTE
All our staff are educated at their induction how to separate the entire store’s waste into recycling bins, including waste from staff areas. Any of this waste which is organic is taken straight to the local pig farmer. We also reduce waste by using compostable trays when wrapping and traying our produce.
REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
We use CO2 in our refrigeration system, which saves up to 7% of power consumption and lowers the supermarket’s carbon footprint by a huge 20%. Among the other benefits of CO2 refrigeration are that it is non toxic and does not contain CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) like other refrigerants which react with and deplete Earth’s ozone layer.
SAVING WATER
We recycle rain water to irrigate the car park garden. This is done by collecting rain water from the roof and put into a holding tank in our carpark.
