Panhead The Vandal NZIPA

Brewed In

Upper Hutt

What to expect:

Passionfruit, lime and diesel hot rod

Judges Comments:

The Vandal is a lime green 1919 Dodge Bucket truck that was converted into hot-rod by Tauranga teenager John Reid in the 1960s. The name and label of this beer is a tribute to that masterpiece of design – and what’s inside the bottle is just as high-octane. Officially it’s called a New Zealand Pale Ale but at 8 percent it’s definitely in the IPA territory. Huge passionfruit, lime, diesel and grape juice notes plus some sweet alcohol heat are tightly bound with a slick, oily mouthfeel that coats the entire palate in lush goodness. Despite the booming engine of flavour this purrs with balance.

Pairing Recommendation:

The bright New Zealand hops in this heavyweight IPA will stand up to fresh and fragrant Mexican-style foods. A spicy beef burrito with lettuce, cheese, chipotle mayo and/or guacamole.
