Another returning entry to the Top 30 from last year and a great effort by the Sawmill team to keep the consistency high after they were forced to find alternative brewing locations, following a large fire at their Matakana-based brewery in late 2019. The brewery and restaurant – a popular tourist destination – had to close for a number of months over summer so this is a great reward for the team. This is a tightly structured beer with a late-breaking bitterness that hangs around like a good dog. Coherent, clean and with lots of tart, lemon-zesty flavour you’ll finish a glass before you know it.
This beer straddles the European-NZ divide so perhaps food from Turkey, a country that straddles east and west. Delicately spiced Turkish-style kofta is perfect and perhaps kazan dibi - a caramelized milk pudding - for afterwards.
