Deutz Marlborough Cuvee Methode Traditionelle Rosé

One of the favourite names for bubble lovers, Deutz Marlborough Cuvée has a French connection, as Champagne Deutz (est. 1838) lends its name to this consistently excellent methode traditionnelle, made right here in the heart of our wine country, Marlborough. Fine and delicately aromatic with raspberry, rock melon and lemon peel notes with subtle yeasty complexity, it’s delightfully expressed in the mouth offering fabulous texture and scintillating vibrancy. It’s gorgeously poised and cream-smooth with a lingering joyful finish. It’s deceptively light yet persistent and engaging with sensual complexity. Try this – burrata and prosciutto with best money-can-buy extra virgin olive oil. Total seduction. Deutz Rosé does casual with ease too. Take it on a picnic with a basket full of yummy goodies, or sip away with sweet & salty popcorn while watching your favourite romcom.

Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2020

Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first wineries in Marlborough and has received international acclaim for their distinctive Sauvignon Blanc. Their story is one of “vision, adventure, and captivating flavour” with vineyards cropped 30% lower than the regional average. Cloudy Bay produce many exceptional wines and this premium Chardonnay is an elegant superstar. Divine perfume, noteworthy concentration and a subtle oak lift on the nose, with aromas of pear and white blossom with citrus purity woven through the long, crisp palate. The 2020 vintage was challenged by staffing and transport logistics related to the global pandemic.  However, the warm, dry growing season was one of the best in recent years with high sunshine hours and cool nights resulting in fruit harvested in pristine conditions. Winemakers love this vintage! Serve with Bluff oysters, sushi, or classic roast chicken with all the trimmings.

Bald Hills Single Vineyard Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2017

The original owners of Bald Hills planted their vineyard in spring of 1997 beneath a range of “bald hills” on the Cairnmuir side of Bannockburn, where the sandy soils beside the Lake Dunstan Inlet give impressive definition and tannin to Pinot Noir. They now have 6.5ha of Pinot Noir planted including the clones 5, 6 10/5, Abel and 115 that were used in this wine. The vintage 2017 was cooler and low yielding giving deep colour, firm structure and freshness to the wine. Dark plum, mulberry, and dried herb compliment the spicy oak in the background. This fantastic example impressed our judges with youthfulness and complexity proving that quality Pinot Noir from an exceptional vintage can evolve gracefully and become more interesting with time.  A delicious wine to try with game bird, roast lamb or veggie stir-fry.

Rockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021

Winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis joined Rockburn in 2005 and his wealth of experience and hands-off approach has delivered a bounty of award-winning wines for nearly two decades. This robust, yet classy wine comes from two Central Otago vineyards (85% Parkburn and 15% Gibbston) in what the winemaker deems a “stellar vintage”. The judges are in total agreement and celebrate the concentration and complexity of this wine. Rockburn has captured the essence of Central Otago in this Pinot Noir with lifted spice, bright fruit and an adventurous vibe. Raspberry, ripe cherry, dark plum, rose petals, wild thyme and gamey aromas are in harmony with the bright acidity and chalky tannins. A sensory kaleidoscope in liquid form! Be adventurous and serve with tahr or wild duck; alternatively go classic with lamb chops and gourmet sausages with polenta chips.

Church Road Grand Reserve Hawkes Bay Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2020

Rich in history, winemaking at Church Road began in 1897, one of the earliest to begin winegrowing in the Hawke’s Bay. Church Road is also a modern winery with innovation at the forefront, combining tradition with carefully chosen technologies to refine and enhance their wines. This, from an exceptional vintage, is a compelling rendition of a Hawke’s Bay red. Wonderfully complex with cassis, vanilla, cedary oak, dark chocolate and subtle tobacco notes on the nose, followed by a sumptuous palate delivering multi-layered mouthfeel with beautifully pitched chalky tannins. Robust and built to age, it’s also immediately appealing with flavoursome dishes. Steak and roast lamb are traditional pairings with Bordeaux-style reds. Duck confit is also brilliant, and so are pulled-pork pizza, cheese & bacon burgers and tomato-based fish stew.
