The Gates Lodge burger

Nothing beats homemade burgers off the BBQ! This recipe makes tasty burgers and goes brilliantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and many red wine blends.





  • 500gm Beef Mince
  • 1/2 Cup chopped red onion
  • 2 Cloves minced garlic
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Chilli powder (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp chopped capers
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 Tbsp Breadcrumbs
  • Salt and Pepper


  1. Mix 500gms beef mince with ½ cup of finely chopped red onion, 2 cloves of minced garlic, a teaspoon each of ground cumin, dried thyme, dried oregano and a good pinch of chilli powder (optional), 1 tablespoon of chopped capers, a raw egg, 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs and salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Shape into thick patties and cook on a BBQ until desired doneness
  3. Serve on toasted hamburger buns with tomato slices, lettuce and mayonnaise

Serve with a glass of Cabernet Merlot from Hawke’s Bay.
