RePlay returnable container trial
Available at New World Birkenhead & New World Willis Street.

Try RePlay: a returnable container system by Bonson, that lets you enjoy good food without the single-use packaging.
It supports the shift to a circular economy by replacing single-use containers with durable ones that can be borrowed, returned, and reused.
How it works?
- Borrow: Simply choose your preferred deli food and tap your credit card* to borrow a container. Then pay for the deli product at checkout as normal.
- Return: At home, once your Replay container is empty, remove the price label and rinse the container – you can pop it into your reusable shopping bags to remember to bring it back into store. If the container is returned within four weeks, there is no charge. If returned late, there will be a charge of $3 to help replenish the fleet of containers.
- RePlay: Return your Replay containers to the RePlay smart bin in store where we ensure the container is sanitised and ready to go again and again.
*We will validate this with a temporary pending transaction. We will not store your credit card details. This validation will show as a pending transaction on your statement, but the payment will not be processed. It will disappear after a few days.
FAQs
RePlay containers are available at New World Birkenhead (Auckland) and New World Willis Street Metro (Wellington) and can be returned to smart bins located at the same store.
A deli team member scans the QR code on the container, and you tap your credit card or smart wallet. You can provide your email to get reminders to return the container. Your order is prepared as usual, and you pay at checkout like normal.
Absolutely. Returned containers and lids go through a rigorous commercial wash and sterilisation process to ensure they're completely safe and hygienic for the next use.
Once you've enjoyed your meal, simply remove the label and give the container a quick rinse. Place it in your reusable shopping bag so it's easy to bring back with you, just make sure to return it within four weeks.
If you damage the container so it can no longer be reused you may still be charged. However, please return it as you may still be eligible for part refund.
If you’ve lost your lid, you can still return the container base to avoid being charged. Return any lids you find later to the smart bin with your next container.
Yes, RePlay containers come in three sizes – small, medium, and large – to fit your needs.
Payment, returns and refunds
All container sizes work the same way and there is no difference in the non-return charge for each.
You’ll need to validate your contactless credit card to borrow a RePlay container. If you don’t have one, you can still use a standard single-use container instead.
Simply rinse the container and lid, and bring them back to any participating supermarket. Scan the QR code on the base of the container at the RePlay smart bin to register the return. That’s it!
Each container is individually logged in the system, so be sure to scan every QR code individually to confirm return and ensure you are not charged.
If the QR code doesn’t scan, ask a team member for help. Your return can still be registered manually.
If you return the container between 4 weeks and 6 months after use, you’ll be charged $3 but you may receive a partial refund of $1 once the container is returned.
If the container is not returned within 6 months, the $3 charge remains, and no refund will be issued. The container is yours to keep or recycle.
We ask that you rinse the container and lid before returning it. All containers and lids are then professionally washed and sterilised at the supermarket before being reused.
Nope! No app is needed. Just tap your card and go. It’s simple and hassle-free.
