Pair these award-winning malt-driven classics with our yummy recipes

We’ve got three genuine classic beers in this year’s line-up, Bootleg Brewing’s Late Night Monk Fight, a Belgian-style quadruple; Otago Brew School’s Klassenbester, a German Dunkelweizen; and Three Sisters Rumours in the Dark, a Munchner Dunkel, also a German classic.

These are all fantastic food beers, with their malty structure doing a similar job to red wine when it comes to food.

Late Night Monk Fight is a decadent, high-alcohol beer with beautiful ruby colour. It will look great at a dinner table next to some slow-cooked beef cheeks and mashed potato.

Otago Brew School’s Klassenbester is all about banana and chocolate, but on a light, easy-drinking base. It can handle savoury delights such as pork sausages or bacon butties.

The other German-style beer in the Top-30, Rumours in the Dark from Three Sisters is a bit more robust and spicy thanks to the use of rye, so serve it up next to a great sandwich like a classic Reuben, or a steak sandwich with caramelised onions.
