Zeelandt was one of the first of the new-wave craft breweries to pop up in the burgeoning beer region of Hawke’s Bay. Set up in Esk Valley wine territory by Chris Barber, their focus is on classical European styles and you don’t get much more classic than a German-style Schwarzbier, or dark lager. This has an attractive chocolate aroma with a hint of cold coffee in the background and a slight acidity. The body is lager-light but rich in flavour. It’s full, smooth, sweet and yet delicately refreshing – a great winter alternative to a pale lager.
This is a classic German-style beer that's light bodied but with some lovely chocolate notes. Think classic German food, from sausages and sauerkraut for a main and apple strudel for dessert.
